Hispano Tex earns OCS Certification

OCS, a Commitment to Natural Fibers and Sustainability

What is the Organic Content Standard (OCS) Certification?

Hispano Tex is proud to announce that we have obtained the Organic Content Standard (OCS) certification. This prestigious certification, awarded by Textile Exchange, is a voluntary global standard designed to track and verify the content of organically grown materials in final products. The OCS aims to promote organic agricultural production and ensure that products made with organic materials can be trusted by consumers.

The Importance of OCS Certification

The OCS certification is crucial for maintaining the integrity of organic textiles. It sets clear criteria for third-party certification of organic materials and chain of custody. This ensures that the organic content in products is accurately documented and can be trusted by buyers and end-users.

By achieving this certification, Hispano Tex demonstrates our commitment to transparency, quality, and sustainability in the textile industry.

What is the purpose of OCS Certification?

The OCS certification can be applied to all non-food products containing at least 5% organic material. Developed and periodically updated by Textile Exchange, the primary goal of OCS is to enable the transparent, independent, and complete traceability of organic raw materials in a product. This is achieved by tracking the materials from their origin to the finished product, with everything audited and certified by a third party.

What OCS Guarantees

The OCS certification guarantees:

  • The presence and amount of organic fibers in a product’s composition.
  • Impartial and credible certification for each stage of the supply chain.
  • Traceability of products from the farm to the finished product.
  • Commitment from stakeholders (producers, suppliers, distributors, etc.).

Once certified, products can display the OCS logo, demonstrating compliance with the certification’s requirements. Depending on the proportion of organic material in the final product, there are two levels of OCS certification:

  1. OCS 100: Products contain more than 95% certified organic fibers and less than 5% other fibers.
  2. OCS Blended: Products contain between 5% and 95% certified organic fibers.

OCS vs. GOTS Certification: Understanding the differences

While both the OCS and the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certifications are important in the organic textile market, they have distinct differences. The scope of certification for OCS focuses solely on the production management of products, whereas GOTS includes product production management, environmental protection, and social responsibility.

Regarding certification objects, OCS applies to non-food products produced with approved organic raw materials, while GOTS is limited to textiles made from organic natural fibers.

Raw material requirements:

  • OCS: Requires products to contain more than 5% of raw materials that meet recognized organic standards. It allows blending with conventional cotton.
  • GOTS: Demands stricter criteria, requiring 70% organic natural fibers with no blending, and allows up to 10% synthetic or recycled fibers (25% for sports products), without the use of genetically modified fibers.

These differences highlight the unique focus of each certification, with OCS providing more flexibility in blending materials while maintaining organic integrity. If you are interested in the goals of GOTS certification, you can read more about it here
